In bio manufacturing, strong science alone is not enough to build a globally competitive company. Moving from technical validation to commercial scale requires founders to navigate process development, manufacturing scale-up, unit economics, customer adoption, strategic partnerships, and capital formation.
Many of the hardest challenges emerge during scale-up. A technology may work at laboratory scale but face new constraints around cost, yield, feedstocks, manufacturing infrastructure, quality, or commercial viability as production expands. These issues can force founders to rethink both the process and the business model required to reach scale.
This session will bring together founders and operators who have built bio-manufacturing companies, alongside investors and strategic industry leaders who have supported companies through commercialization and global growth.
The discussion will explore how companies move from technical validation to scalable unit economics; what commonly breaks during scale-up and how founders respond; how customers, strategic partners, and manufacturing choices shape growth; and what global investors need to see before committing capital at the next stage.
Ultimately, the session will ask what Japanese bio-manufacturing startups need to do today to turn strong science into globally competitive businesses.
