Many of the technologies shaping our future, from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to biotechnology and advanced materials, originate in universities and research institutions. Yet only a small fraction of breakthrough discoveries successfully evolve into innovations that create significant societal and economic impact.

This session brings together leaders from academia, policy, and innovation ecosystems to explore how world-changing innovation can emerge from academic research. Drawing on perspectives from Japan and Europe, the discussion will examine the conditions needed to transform scientific excellence into global impact, including talent development, entrepreneurship, investment, international collaboration, and supportive public policy.

As nations seek new sources of growth and solutions to global challenges, the conversation will consider the role of universities as engines of innovation and how stronger partnerships among researchers, governments, investors, and startups can accelerate the journey from laboratory breakthroughs to real-world transformation.
