Dual-use technologies and deep-tech startups are drawing rapidly growing attention worldwide, and increasingly in Japan. In the United States and elsewhere, government demand in defense and security has driven startup growth and the creation of new industries. In Japan, startups with world-class technologies are now emerging across a range of fields, and investors at home and abroad are beginning to commit serious capital to this space.
Technology and money alone, however, do not create an industry. Clearly defined needs, opportunities for demonstration, rapid procurement, capital that carries companies through mass production and overseas expansion, and actors that bridge government and industry — an ecosystem begins to move only when these connect as a single line. This session brings together frontier startups, domestic and international investors, an accelerator bridging government and industry, and policymakers, to take stock of where defense innovation in Japan stands today and to discuss what it will take to root a dual-use ecosystem in Japan.
